Initially, I could not see why the HydroJug tumbler was generating so much excitement. Yes, it is available in attractive prints and offers a capacity comparable with our favourite Stanley Quencher and Yeti Rambler, but what was making these good-looking water bottles such an online sensation?

HydroJug Traveler 40-Ounce Tumbler and its removable lid

The feature that won me over was the lid. I am exceptionally fussy about tumbler lids: if one cannot be dismantled, I do not believe it can be cleaned properly. I would always be concerned about mould, mildew or other residue building up in the gaps around the straw, lid and drinking spout. So I was delighted to discover HydroJug’s removable lid, sold separately for use with the brand’s classic 40-ounce tumbler.

The ingenious lid twists apart into individual sections-the flip straw, lid and bottle straw-which screw back together after washing to create a 100% leakproof seal. Whenever the tumbler needs cleaning, it takes only an extra five seconds to pull the parts apart and put them in the dishwasher for a complete wash. There are no hard-to-reach corners and no unpleasant discoveries.

HydroJug insulation, capacity and portability

The detachable lid is not the HydroJug’s only strength. Its 40-ounce capacity is generous for people like me, who want to stay hydrated and cannot be bothered to refill a water bottle constantly. It could also suit anyone who prefers iced water. Although most popular insulated water bottles now use double-wall insulation, the HydroJug is triple-insulated. This means it has a third layer-an internal copper coating-that helps drinks remain nearer to their original temperature for longer. This added insulation has earned plenty of enthusiastic reviews: one shopper said the HydroJug kept the ice in their water whole for 24 hours.

It also gets the practical details right. The insulated tumbler narrows at the base to fit most car cup holders, while its leakproof design is particularly impressive. Shoppers say that, when the lid is securely closed, the HydroJug can be placed in gym or tote bags without spilling a drop. It can even lie on its side beneath an aeroplane seat without putting your laptop at risk of a soaking.

Cream is my preferred colour, though there are several other striking options, including a preppy plaid, collegiate red and a rosy floral design. Or simply buy two. The HydroJug Traveler 40-Ounce Tumbler is worth it.
