Key points

  • Olympic athletes were disqualified after PFAS were found in their ski and snowboard wax.
  • Judges consider PFAS-containing wax harmful to the environment and believe its moisture-repelling qualities could also provide competitors with extra speed.
  • I’ve selected 22 PFAS-free kitchen utensils, frying pans and food-storage containers from brands including Gir, All-Clad and Stasher.

The Olympics are never short of controversy, and this year has been no exception. There have already been claims of favouritism involving French judges, along with allegations of cheating by Canadian curlers. The latest row, however, emerged on Italy’s slopes, where three competitors were disqualified after traces of PFAS were detected in their snowboard and ski wax. These chemicals are prohibited at the Games because of the harm they cause to the environment, soil and crops.

The New York Times reports that PFAS may adversely affect the body, with potential links to low birth weights, birth defects, developmental delays and a greater risk of prostate, kidney and testicular cancers.

So-called forever chemicals do not appear only in ski and snowboard wax. For decades, they were widely used in kitchens too, appearing in non-stick pans, plastic utensils and other products. Considering what is known about the risks associated with these chemicals, it is hard to see why anyone would keep PFAS in their kitchen when non-toxic alternatives are readily available on Amazon.

To help make changing over simpler, I’ve gathered PFAS-free cookware, kitchen tools and storage containers. I’m a fan of my Gir silicone spatula, while a Lodge cast-iron frying pan or a stainless-steel All-Clad frying pan are also reliable choices.

As well as making washing up straightforward, non-stick frying pans make cooking easier. There is real appeal in not having to worry that an egg yolk will break or a piece of fish will fall apart because it has stuck to the pan. Yet that convenience may come at a cost to our health when Teflon and other potentially damaging substances are part of the equation. Many shoppers are moving towards ceramic-coated frying pans, alongside tried-and-tested materials such as cast iron and stainless steel. They demand a little more patience but can serve you well in the kitchen for years. Browse some of our preferred PFAS-free pots and pans, from an All-Clad frying pan to the well-known Our Place Always Pan.

The Lodge cast-iron frying pan offers exceptional value and quality. After testing Misen’s carbon non-stick frying pan for months, Editor Katie Brown has become a devoted fan. Rather than relying on a delicate glazed coating that scratches easily, like other non-stick pans, it gets its non-stick finish through nitriding. This heat-treatment process creates a durable, corrosion-resistant metal surface. She recommends that everyone buy one.
