Amazon, the US e-commerce giant, says it has passed a new milestone in France. In 2025, 170 million items were delivered to Prime members either the same evening or the following day. It is a record.

Amazon Prime delivery record in France

The Seattle group is keen to highlight the figure. Amazon says that last year it achieved a “record speed for Prime deliveries in France”, with more than 170 million items delivered in less than 24 hours. The company attributes this logistics performance to the continued expansion of its French distribution network and the growing use of artificial intelligence in its operations.

For consumers, shorter delivery times represent substantial savings, at least according to the US group’s calculations. Amazon estimates that its French Prime members saved an average of 140 euros during 2025 through fast, free delivery. The company is quick to compare that sum with the annual membership fee of 69.90 euros. Its sales message is straightforward: a Prime membership would pay for itself twice over during the year.

Montpellier becomes eligible for same-evening delivery

The announcement also brings good news for Montpellier residents. The city has now joined the network of urban areas covered by same-evening delivery, becoming part of a group that now includes more than fifteen major French cities. Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Lille are among the locations served, alongside northern urban areas such as Douai, Lens-Liévin, Hénin-Carvin and Valenciennes. The service nevertheless comes with conditions: only eligible orders worth more than 35 euros qualify.

Amazon's logistics network and artificial intelligence

This expansion is built on three strategic pillars. The first is physical infrastructure, through an increasingly dense network across France. The second relies on broader commercial partnerships, notably with Monoprix and Chronodrive, which expand the range of everyday products available for rapid delivery. The third, and arguably the most significant over the medium term, uses artificial intelligence models to optimise stock placement.

In practical terms, these algorithms decide where, when and which types of products should be stored throughout the logistics network. The aim is to position the most sought-after items as close to customers as possible, cutting delivery distances and therefore delivery times. This approach also helps streamline operating costs, although Amazon prefers to stress the customer benefit.

One question remains unaddressed in the press release: the environmental impact of this race for speed. Although Amazon has made numerous announcements about electrifying its delivery fleet and its climate commitments, faster logistics cycles inevitably raise questions about whether this delivery model is compatible with decarbonisation targets.
